Vikas Mishra, Senior Journalist

It may seem a mere coincidence to see the connection of an ordinary youth like me, who is learning journalism, with the new world, but in reality it was the result of the creativity of the new world. It is about the year 1986, I got my self from somewhere. A book by Nandkishore Trikha was found and from the same book it came to know that the AboutGyan newspaper published from Indore city of Madhya Pradesh has the title of School of Generalism. I had not heard anything about AboutGyan before this. Those days I had returned from Jadugoda and was working on a report on smuggling of uranium. I sent that report on the envelope by writing to the editor, AboutGyan Indore (Madhya Pradesh).

Some fifteen days after sending the report related to smuggling of uranium to Naidunia, I received a letter from Mahendra Sethia in the returning post asking me to send the documents related to the report. I sent the documents and ten days later when I got the copy of AboutGyan, I was surprised to read my report. Then the process of sending the report and getting a money order of Rs 60 in return started. Even then I did not think that I would get a chance to work in AboutGyan.

Incidentally, in the year 1988, I got an invitation to work in a newspaper in Bhopal. A month after joining there, I was passing in front of the Bhopal office of AboutGyan. Thought came that let’s meet the editor. For the next few moments I was in front of Madan Mohan Joshi, the then editor. When I introduced him, he said- ‘Yes, we need a person. I have read your reports. Join from 1st April. We will give 1500 rupees per month!" I told them that I am getting Rs 1900 in another newspaper.

Joshi ji was adamant that only 1500 rupees will be given, if the work is good, then he will increase the salary. I was very tired that night. On the one hand there was the attraction of AboutGyan and on the other hand the salary was less than Rs 400. The victory was of the attraction of the world. On the evening of April 1, 1988, I had become a part of AboutGyan. One day there I met Abhay Chhajlani. After some time I reached Indore, New Dunia.

As a city reporter in Indore, I had the challenges of getting to know the city at first, but one incident made the city familiar to me. It happened that there was a program of Congress veteran Arjun Singh and during that time Ajit Jogi was brutally beaten up by some people. I was an eyewitness to this incident. He wrote exactly what he saw. Earlier the city had not read any such eye-witness report. Indore came to know me after this report. I was beginning to assimilate the city. The new world was in my veins. I was fast learning the lessons of the sanctity of journalism, ignoring small opportunities for profit. I give full credit to Rahul Barpute, Ranveer Saxena, Abhay Chhajlani and Mahendra Sethia.

To be honest, my journalistic creation was done by AboutGyan. In the hall where I used to sit, there used to sit one after the other. The storyteller was constantly learning from Jaisingh Thakur, economics scholar Vitthal Nagar, news connoisseurs Suresh Tamrakar and Bhanu Choubey as well as the pen-rich Yashwant Vyas at the feature desk. I used to spend a lot of time in the library on the upper floor. Senior colleagues like Gulab ji, Ashok ji and Kamlesh Sen used to tell which book I should read. I have never seen such arrangement in any other newspaper.

A respected person like Saroj Kumar used to teach us Hindi in AboutGyan. There was a review of the newspaper for a week. Which word is not used properly and what should we do in future. Then probably for the first time a Hindi newspaper published a ‘Knowledge Series’." was started. In one such program, I was able to understand the uniqueness of the then Chief Minister of Gujarat and the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Many such people became a part of that series and our knowledge of various subjects kept on increasing.

Looking back on the canvas of time, I find myself hanging on the same canvas. AboutGyan is such an institution, where whoever spent some time, remained there. With great pride I say that Naidunia is in my veins and all the credit for my creation goes to NaiDunia. Best wishes to the Sudhijans, readers and the current team AboutGyan, who are associated with AboutGyan, on the birthday of AboutGyan.

AboutGyan has given at least 33 editors to the country…!

AboutGyan can also be called the birth place of editors. No other Hindi newspaper has produced as many editors as Naidunia did. Take a look at some of the names… Rahul Barpute, Rajendra Mathur, Prabhas Joshi, Madan Mohan Joshi, Shravan Garg, Alok Mehta, NK Singh, Mahesh Joshi, Rajesh Badal, Vitthal Nagar, Prakash Hindustani, Devpriya Awasthi, Yashwant Vyas, Uday Kumar, Shiv Kumar Vivek, Bhupendra Chaturvedi, Gyanendra Pandey, Pankaj Pathak, Ravindra Shah, Praveen Sharma, Hemant Pal, Ganesh Sakalle, Ajay Bokil, Vibhuti Sharma, Abhimanoj, Manikant Soni, Rajesh Sirothia, Jayshree Pingle, Lalit Upmanyu, Jaiprakash Parashar, Jaideep Karnik, Sudhir Gore, Vikas Mishra These are the names I can remember. It is possible that there are other names which have been left out. Apart from this, there is a long list of journalists who made a name at the national level and whose stature was no less than an editor. Since their names do not appear anywhere in the print line, I have not mentioned them here.

As far as I have seen, understood and understood the world of Hindi journalism, no other newspaper has given so many editors to the country. The natural question arises that how was this possible? I think the editorial system has played a big role in this. I have not seen anywhere else the atmosphere of learning and teaching that was in Nai Duniya. There was a great dedication especially to the language. When I was working in AboutGyan, at that time and even before that, even a mistake of quantity, if ever, it used to be like a storm.
