Kuwait: Youth flock to vaccine centres for COVID-19 jab

In the past few days, young people have been flocking to the vaccination centres to get the COVID-19 shot, local media reported.

Dr. Mariam Karimi, an internal medicine doctor at the Mubarak Al Kabeer Hospital, stated that many of the COVID-19 cases reported in Kuwait were among the youth. She went on to say that the way to reduce the likely chance of getting infected is to get vaccinated.

Two months ago, the spokesman of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Abdullah Al Sanad, revealed that 67.12 percent of the cases in January were reported amongst 16-44-year-olds. While the Ministry of Health has not indicated the exact number of people that have been vaccinated (either receiving the first or both doses), local media is reporting that around 800,000 residents and citizens have been vaccinated.

Kuwait has been working on vaccinating as many people as possible in the past few weeks as it is aiming to vaccinate one million people by the end of Ramadan (in about three weeks).

The speeded up vaccination process occurs as Kuwait received the second batch of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine last week. It is estimated that the shipment contained around 129,000 doses.

As several countries halt the use of the Oxford vaccine, the Ministry of Health reiterated that there have not been any cases of blood clotting or severe negative symptoms. They added that they are closely following the development in the Oxford and the global recommendations and studies.
