Mourinho’s Rodon decision vs Wycombe will hint at Spurs team to face Liverpool

Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham team should be feeling rather fresh for this evening’s FA Cup clash against Wycombe Wanderers following a rare midweek without a game.

Trying to deal with a hectic schedule throughout the 2020/21 season due to their involvement in three cup competitions as well as their 38 league fixtures, the Spurs squad do tend to be in action every few days.

However, that wasn’t the case building up to the FA Cup fourth round tie against Wycombe Wanderers having played last Sunday at Sheffield United.

Although the squad have had plenty of time to recover from the 3-1 win at Bramall Lane, Mourinho is still expected to shake things up for the trip to Adams Park as Liverpool are to come in N17 on Thursday in the Premier League.

As the Lilywhites don’t exactly have a lot of time to prepare for the crunch clash against Jurgen Klopp’s side, Mourinho’s team selection at Wycombe is likely to hint at his plans for Thursday evening.

Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Eric Dier are likely to miss out on the starting XI, thus handing a rare opportunity to those on the periphery of the first team.

A game many would have pencilled Joe Rodon in to start just over a week ago due to his lack of match action, Mourinho’s XI could very well hint at the Welshman’s place in his plans for both his defence and also the Liverpool game.

Clearly knowing the vast majority of players who start in his best Tottenham XI, his past few team selections suggest that he is still yet to settle on his preferred centre-back partnership.

Looking like he had decided on it prior to Christmas with Toby Alderweireld and Dier forming a solid understanding and keeping clean sheets against the likes of Man City and Arsenal, the Belgian international hasn’t started in three of the last four league games.

Davinson Sanchez was brought in for two of those in the 1-1 draws against Wolves and Fulham, yet he found himself back on the bench last weekend against Sheffield United.

Mourinho shocked many by opting for a back three of Dier, Rodon and Ben Davies against the Premier League’s basement boys, but it did work as they ran out comfortable winners.

Rodon caught the eye against the Blades with a strong performance and he was praised by his head coach after the game in South Yorkshire.

Joe Rodon was in top form in the win over Sheffield United

“He played well. He did many things well, a couple of things not so well, but he’s a player who of course was playing in the Championship. A young guy, he has to learn. One thing is you want a central defender and you pay £70m for one of the top centre-backs in Europe, then to resolve your problems,” the 57-year-old told football.london.

“Another thing is to get a good player, but a player who needs to develop. With Joe, that’s the situation. He has to learn, he has to make mistakes, he has to play, he has to not play. We have to try to give him conditions to perform. but potentially, potentially of course, he’s a good player who can become much much better.

“I’m happy. He did the same against Chelsea. He made a mistake that could have cost the game in the last minute but this is the mistake a young guy coming from a different reality can make and he has to be supported like he is and I am very pleased with his performance.”

Given how well he did against Sheffield United eight days ago, Rodon may have played himself into Mourinho’s thinking for the Liverpool game and that will subsequently mean no starting position against Wycombe in the FA Cup.

With Alderweireld and Sanchez not selected in the win against Chris Wilder’s men, the duo are in the driving seat ahead of the Wales international to start at Adams Park in the fourth round of the famous cup competition as they desperately need the minutes in their quest to change Mourinho’s thinking at the back.

Perhaps seen as a certainty to be included against the Chairboys after only playing four times prior to his selection in Sheffield, Rodon’s strong showing may now mean he rests up on Monday and instead gets the nod against Liverpool three days later.

If that is the case then it may well suggest at Mourinho’s centre-back plans going forward as he looks to find the perfect balance after so much chopping and changing in the first few months of the campaign.

Seen as one for the future at Tottenham following his move from Swansea in October, Rodon may potentially become a first-team regular a lot sooner than initially expected.

Mourinho’s decision over his team will tell us a lot more when the sides are officially announced at 6.45pm later this evening.
